Metal Work

Monday Afternoon Drop-In Welding & Fabrication Sessions

Time: Monday Afternoons, 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM

Location: DSWW Metal Workshop, 19 Morshead Street Ashmont (Pro Patria Centre Grounds)

The Monday afternoon drop-in sessions are designed to be completely casual, self-paced, and low-pressure. Unlike our formal, accredited TAFE NSW certification courses, there are no classrooms, rigid schedules, or assessments here. You can roll into the workshop right at 5:00 PM or drop by later in the evening after your work day wraps up. The entire environment is built around peer-led learning and camaraderie, meaning you will be working directly alongside fellow veterans, current ADF members, first responders, and family supporters who are all there to share skills and have a yarn.

Projects and Learning

These sessions cater to every skill level, whether you are a complete beginner or an experienced fabricator. Beginners can focus on the absolute fundamentals, learning machine setup, safety protocols, and basic MIG, TIG, or stick welding using scrap metal. If you want you can collaborate on common shed projects, there’s always a project on the go. Members are also highly encouraged to bring in their own hobbies or repair jobs from home, such as fixing a trailer, modifying camping gear, or working on metal art.

Workshop Safety and Gear

Safety is our top priority in the workshop, so proper attire is required to participate. All attendees must wear clothing made from heavy cotton drill or denim (avoid synthetic activewear, as sparks will melt it). Sturdy, closed-toe shoes are mandatory, and steel-cap boots are highly recommended. The shed provides all necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) including auto-darkening welding helmets, gloves, and jackets, but you are always welcome to bring your own preferred gear.
