Bee Keeping

Learn how to Keep Bees at Defence Shed

Our Beekeeping Program offers members the opportunity to learn the art and science of beekeeping through hands-on, practical experience across an entire beekeeping season.

Led by the Defence Shed's resident beekeeper, Trevor of Trevor's Beekeeping, participants follow the journey of a hive from Spring through to Autumn, gaining insight into every stage of the beekeeping cycle. From constructing and maintaining hives, understanding colony health and behaviour, and raising queen bees from larvae, through to honey extraction, bottling, and hive management, participants experience the process firsthand.

The program provides a unique opportunity to learn sustainable beekeeping practices while developing practical skills, knowledge, and confidence working with bees. Participants gain an appreciation for the vital role bees play in our environment and food systems, while enjoying the rewards of harvesting and bottling honey produced by the hives.

Beekeeping is a seasonal activity, with hive activity occurring from Spring through Autumn. During Winter, the bees enter a quieter period and hive activity slows as colonies conserve energy through the colder months.

Sessions are held on Tuesdays and are suitable for both beginners and those looking to expand their beekeeping knowledge. No prior experience is required.

Whether you're interested in establishing your own hive, learning a new skill, or simply enjoying the therapeutic and rewarding nature of working with bees, the Beekeeping Program offers a welcoming and supportive environment to get involved.
